America Goes To War…Too Often, Too Easily

What You Say When Someone Tells You That The US Needs To Attack Iran or Send Troops to Syria
by Gene Griessman, Ph.D.

Tell them that the decision to send the American military anywhere needs to be a Congressional decision. Explain that in recent decades Americans have gone to war too often, too easily.

You simply cannot understand contemporary American society without knowing the role the American military plays in it. Rachel Maddow, in her New York Times bestseller Drift, presents a startlingly fresh and disturbing picture of what has happened to the American military in the past several decades.  She makes a strong case for Congress debating fully and openly any war-making decision.

Maddow reminds us that the nation’s founders deliberately gave the war-making powers to Congress, not to the President. The President is commander in chief–that is true–but the decision to go to war rests with Congress. At least that was the way it was intended.

“…We ought to realize by now (see Korea, see Vitnam, see Afghanistan, see Iraq, see Iran) that deploying the US military, or dealing billions of dollars a year of arms to our ally of the moment that can serve as a regional rival to our enemy of the moment, is not always the best way to make threats go away. Our military and weapons process is a fantastic and perfectly weighted hammer, but that doesn’t make every international problem a nail.”
